Nutrition has taken on so many different meanings in today’s world that it can be difficult to know what it really is. The media is full of new diets, “super foods," and fake foods, all promising to make you thin and happy. The truth is that with all of this we have moved far from understanding what nutritional wellness is and how to just eat normally. Today’s lifestyles have left many of us depending on sugar and caffeine for energy. We are often fatigued, stressed, and just not feeling well. Nutritional wellness is not a specific diet but a lifestyle that incorporates normal eating of whole, real food into a larger picture of movement, career, relationships, emotional balance, and spirituality such that the entire body is truly nourished. Normal eating means eating to give our bodies the energy they need to move and be strong and healthy, and stopping when we are satisfied- not stuffed. Normal eating means being in synchrony with our genes as well as our activity level. Babies and animals intuitively know how to do this but unfortunately too many of us eat in response to so many other reasons that we need to relearn this basic skill. The specifics of this lifestyle are unique to each individual- no one plan works for everyone. To achieve lifelong nutritional wellness – we will work together to develop an individual plan.
Individual Nutrition plans can help a large range of issues, from achieving general wellness and healthy aging to targeting more specific needs with MNT, or medical nutritional therapy. For example, specific problems that need a different approach to achieve Nutritional Wellness, include prediabetes/diabetes, metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure and cholesterol, irritable bowel syndrome, or osteoporosis. These conditions require a more focused approach to reverse – or at least control – these conditions before they become worse. Treatment can include both high quality supplements and “medical foods” specifically designed for these different conditions, until reaching a maintenance stage that moves to lifelong nutritional wellness.
Individual nutrition plans can also conquer metabolic milestones. What happens as we get to be 30, 40, more? All of a sudden, habits of diet and lifestyle that seemed to work just fine – don’t! Is this just “welcome to middle age?" No!! Understanding the changes going on in our bodies and learning how to combat them will help you conquer these metabolic milestones and enjoy healthy aging!
